The intercontinental lineup celebrates the rich music traditions connecting Scotland, Ireland and the US.

First conceived as a series of live music television productions in 1995 for the BBC, Transatlantic Sessions has since expanded into a ticketed touring event all over the UK. This year’s nine date trek begins in Scotland on Feb 2 at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, before heading to Edinburgh and winding its way south through the English cities of Gateshead, Buxton, Bristol, Liverpool and Birmingham, culminating on Feb 11 at Royal Festival Hall in London. In addition to Carlene Carter, Transatlantic Sessions Tour 2024 will include progressive Irish folk singer-songwriter Joshua Burnside, Gaelic singer Kim Carnie, Canadian folk duo Allison de Groot & Tatiana Hargreaves, and a house band led by Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas. Transatlantic Sessions alumni from previous years include Alison Krauss, Béla Fleck, Emmylou Harris, Guy Clark, Iris Dement, James Taylor, Joan Osborne, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Rufus Wainwright.

Carlene Carter has been releasing music for more than four decades. The daughter of June Carter Cash and country star Carl Smith, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, she became a singer in The Carter Family at 17. With the release of her first several albums, she established herself on the edgier end of the country music spectrum, having recorded in England with Graham Parker’s band The Rumour and Nick Lowe’s Rockpile. Working with producer Howie Epstein (of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers), Carlene Carter became Nashville's homecoming queen of 1990 when her rockin' "I Fell In Love" topped the country singles and video charts, and the album was named one of the year's 10 best by Time, People, and Stereo Review. Award nominations followed for the Academy of Country Music's Top New Female Vocalist, and Best Country Vocal Performance, Female (for the I Fell In Love album) at the 1991 Grammy Awards. Her dynamic personality made her a natural as VH1's first country video hostess with her own daily hour, The Carlene Carter Show, and she had another smash hit single and video with "Every Little Thing," from Little Love Letters, in 1993. She has been releasing albums and touring steadily since and was prominently featured in Ken Burns’ Country Music miniseries in 2019.

In advance of Carlene Carter’s departure to the UK, Paramount+ will premiere June on January 16. Directed by Emmy® Award-winner Kristen Vaurio, this feature-length documentary about country singer-songwriter June Carter Cash features rare and never-before-seen archival material that reveals the extraordinary life work of a monumental woman and her iconic entertainment career. Featuring interviews with the star herself, as well as family members, including daughter Carlene, as well as friends like Dolly Parton, Reese Witherspoon and Willie Nelson, June shines a spotlight on the history of country music and the mark the Carter and Cash families made on the genre.

“This film offers a great opportunity to realize that June was a star of television and music from an early age—decades before she became ‘Mrs. Johnny Cash,’” Carlene Carter said. “While some may not fully be aware of her many talents, influence, and just how much she mattered as an entertainer, this lovely documentary offers clear insight for everyone to see the true character and the joy she shared.”

Transatlantic Sessions Tour 2024 Dates:

Feb 2: Glasgow - Glasgow Royal Concert Hall

Feb 4: Glasgow - Glasgow Royal Concert Hall

Feb 5: Edinburgh - Usher Hall

Feb 6: Gateshead - The Glasshouse

Feb 7: Buxton - Opera House

Feb 8: Bristol - Beacon Hall

Feb 9: Liverpool - Liverpool Philharmonic

Feb 10: Birmingham - Symphony Hall

Feb 11: London - Royal Festival Hall

More information and tickets available at:

https://www.transatlanticsessions.com/
Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/73053662023-11-17T17:56:54-06:002023-11-17T18:07:17-06:00New Documentary on June Carter Cash coming to Paramount+

Carlene's mom June Carter Cash is the subject of a new feature-length documentary entitled “JUNE,” which will premiere on Paramount+ on Tuesday, January 16, 2024 in the U.S. and Canada, and on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in the U.K., Australia, Latin America, Brazil, Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

Carlene, who is among the Executive Producers, recently attended the New York screening and said: "This film offers a great opportunity to realize that June was a star of television and music from an early age – decades before she became 'Mrs. Johnny Cash.' The song, written by Dion and Mike Aquilina, comes in advance of an entirely new album from the rock/blues/gospel great who has maintained a significant presence in American music over the course of an unprecedented eight decades.

Dion, who was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame almost 35 years ago by the late Lou Reed, commented, "Basically, it’s a song about the ordinary person being a hero and championing the cause of the people around them. You don’t have to look at cable news or online and don’t look to politicians to save you. Look into your own heart and be a hero to the ten people you affect in your life the most. Patriotism really isn’t about politics; we’re all Americans, so values and character are what matter most. Stop looking elsewhere for the answers to our problems; look into your own heart."

The track’s release is accompanied by a new music video featuring Dion and Carlene, as well as scenes of ordinary Americans in pursuit of their lives and dreams.

Dion expressed great enduring admiration for his duet partner and the legacy she represents. "She’s a member of the Carter Family who were there when country music began. I’ve always loved this girl’s voice. She’s so beautiful and sings with such heart; she’s so authentic. I just love the presence she brings to the song."

Carlene Carter commented, "I was flattered and delighted when Dion got in touch and asked me to join him on this song. It’s about self-reliance and unity and doing what you can for those you cherish most. I can’t help but characterize it as a heroic effort and I’m proud to have been part of it."

Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/72587822023-08-17T20:57:43-05:002023-10-16T09:55:38-05:00Carlene is Very Special Guest on Transatlantic Sessions UK Tour 2024!

Transatlantic Sessions returns for 2024, exploring and celebrating the rich musical traditions that connect Scotland, Ireland and the US. Daughter of country music legends June Carter and Carl Smith, stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, and granddaughter of “Mother” Maybelle Carter of the original Carter Family, Carlene has more than lived up to the tag of “country music royalty” through her incredible career of album hits and classic songs written with artists like Emmylou Harris and Nick Lowe.

The show’s seasoned house band, guided as ever by Aly Bain and Jerry Douglas, features renowned Celtic and Americana roots musicians Phil Cunningham, John Doyle, Michael McGoldrick, Tatiana Hargreaves & Allison de Groot, John McCusker, Donald Shaw, James Mackintosh and Daniel Kimbro, alongside further guest singers to be announced.

https://www.transatlanticsessions.com/
Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/71548872023-02-16T02:10:51-06:002023-02-16T02:37:15-06:00Carlene on Kathy Valentine Day at Grimey's in Nashville, TN!
It was Kathy Valentine Day at Grimey's New & Preloved Music, as Carlene appeared with her long-time friend at the East Nashville record store on February 14. Kathy hosted a wonderful presentation of stories and songs, including having Carlene join her for a very dramatic (but at times comical) reading from Kathy's memoir All I Ever Wanted, telling of the time when Kathy's home was invaded and they and her other guests were all held at knifepoint!

Kathy and Carlene also performed for the first time ever "I'm the Only One," the song they co-wrote (with Danny B. Harvey) which ended up on the third Go-Go's album, Talk Show, in 1984. Accompanying them on guitar was Aaron Lee Tasjan (pictured here), and then another guest, Alicia Bognanno, also played on what Kathy called her best-known song, “Vacation.”

An emotional highlight was Kathy's performance of "Next to Merle," a poignant song from the soundtrack to her book, about the time when her father, who was not encouraging of Kathy's musical aspirations as a teen, and had not seen her in five years, told her that he put her records (with the Go-Go's) right next to those of his favorite singer, Merle Haggard. The event concluded with Kathy taking questions from the crowd, followed by signing books and memorabilia for a long line of fans.

Other local celebrities in attendance were Chuck Mead (formerly of BR5-49) and Hobie Hubbard of Sawyer Brown. Thank you to Kathy and all of her guests, fans and friends, and the folks at Grimey's for a great time!

Back in 1971, a new club called Exit/In opened in Nashville, with a weekly writer's night for aspiring songwriters. Not long after, a teenage Carlene Smith did a three-song audition, and was selected by the man who ran the songwriter night, Hugh Bennett. As the daughter of country stars Carl Smith and June Carter (Cash), Carlene had sung with her family (the first family of country music, The Carter Family), and on the Johnny Cash show, but this marked her debut as a professional solo musician.

Last Wednesday night, the artist now known as Carlene Carter returned to the now landmark venue for the last time, as she wrote on Instagram the day before: "It’s so sad that Exit/In is closing, but I’m so grateful to be playing one of the final shows tomorrow night! Join me, my band The Lucky Ones, and lots of special guests to celebrate this iconic venue! Let’s send them off in style and rock like hell!"

And rock she did, after an introduction from the same Mr. Hugh Bennett who had done the honors almost 50 years prior, Carlene and her excellent band (Chris Casello: guitar, Al Hill: keyboards, David Spicher: bass, and Patrick Bubert: drums) kicked off with the rousing "I Love You 'Cause I Want To" and "Sweet Meant to Be" (both from her 1993 Little Love Letters CD), then one of the first songs she performed at Exit/In, "Easy From Now On" (which younger audience members knew from Miranda Lambert's 2007 cover). Written with Susanna Clark (wife of Guy), Carlene told how it changed her life when it was recorded by Emmylou Harris (who played Exit/In the following night. In her report on the venue's final month of shows, WPLN's Jewly Hight referred to them as "two architects of country-rock, Carlene Carter and Emmylou Harris.")

Carlene followed with her biggest international hit, "Every Little Thing," written with NRBQ's Al Anderson, then paid tribute to her father Carl Smith (wearing one of his stage jackets) on the song she wrote inspired by his style, "Break My Little Heart in Two" (from 2008's Stronger). She talked about the night he came to see her at Exit/In with The Rumour (the English rock band who played on her debut album in 1978). She was afraid they were too loud for him, but he just said, "I like your act."

Stories were included with most songs, as Carlene told of working with John Mellencamp (her touring partner from 2015-17) on an album of gospel songs, for which she wrote the soul-searching "Damascus Road." Mellencamp didn't follow up on that project, which instead became the Sad Clowns & Hillbillies album, including their duet "Indigo Sunset," which Carlene later performed with keyboardist Hill. Her autobiographical "The Bitter End" (also from Stronger, co-written with Mark Winchester) completed this section of the show before the succession of guests, starting with another country-rock architect, Tracy Nelson.

Carlene said that she had thought of herself as mostly a writer, but seeing Tracy Nelson at the Exit/In inspired her to be a performer too. Nelson started with a song from her upcoming new album, followed by her classic "Down So Low," recorded through the years by Linda Ronstadt, Maria Muldaur, Cyndi Lauper, and the legendary Etta James, who when introduced to Nelson at Exit/In, told her, "I hate that f***ing song. It's too hard to sing." "A lovely memory," Nelson sardonically recalled, before singing it with the same power and passion that made such an impression on the young Carlene (and had the show's other guests watching from the wings). It earned the first standing ovation of the night, and was followed by the two old (or shall we say long-time) friends on Hank Williams' "Honky Tonkin'."

Chuck Mead bemoaned following Tracy Nelson, but not to worry, he won the crowd over joining Carlene on "Baby Ride Easy" (which Carlene's fans know from the Dave Edmunds duet on her 1980 Musical Shapes album), and Johnny Cash's "Get Rhythm." Carlene introduced "Too Bad About Sandy" (also from Musical Shapes) with the story behind the song, about a sister who married an ex-husband ("He was good looking, but kind of an idiot.")

Wade Sapp had posted on his Facebook page, "I get to sing my favorite Carlene Carter song with her tomorrow night." That turned out to be "It Takes One To Know Me," as he brought his deep rich voice to the song Carlene wrote as a Christmas present for stepfather Johnny Cash when she was a young mother living in a trailer with no money. Cash told her it would be his next single, though it was not released until after his death almost 30 years later. Carlene recalled that she "might have followed Paul McCartney" the first time she sang it at one of the star-studded guitar pulls at the Cash house. She later recorded her own version for her Stronger CD.

Carlene's friend Elizabeth Cook soloed on "Daddy, I Got Love For You" from her amazing 2020 Aftermath album, and with Wade performed the theme song, "Bad On Paper (but good between the sheets)," to an upcoming film on her life. She and Carlene had bonded during the recording of Carlene's 2014 Carter Girl CD, as Elizabeth came to sing on two tracks and ended up on six, making her an "honorary Carter Girl." She honored Carlene back, saying she not only carries on her family's legacy, but adds her own to it.

The two were then joined by Ashley Monroe, who Carlene said was a "Smithy cousin" (on her dad's side), as the trio performed the Carter Family classics "Foggy Mountain Top" and "Gold Watch and Chain," with fiddle virtuoso Eamon McLoughlin, and Carlene playing autoharp, wearing finger and thumb picks from her mother June, aunts Helen and Anita, and grandma Maybelle Carter. Ashley talked about growing up listening to Carlene, so it was a dream come true for her to sing "Me and the Wildwood Rose," Carlene's tribute to all of those family members. Carlene praised Ashley's angelic voice and said she was the only one she would let sing that song, which segued into "Will the Circle Be Unbroken," as all the night's guests returned to join in, taking turns on verses as the enthusiastic audience sang along to the familiar chorus.

When the stage cleared, the crowd kept applauding, eventually chanting "CARLENE! CARLENE! CARLENE!" until she and the band returned for another of her signature hits, "I Fell In Love," with its audience participation response, "Whatcha wanna do that for?"

Recalling past shows at Exit/In, from Steve Martin (who a 1978 People magazine article said Carlene dated) to Waylon Jennings with opener Jim Varney, Carlene said it was a place where you saw so many things that you would always remember. Her Wednesday night farewell to the venue that provided her start was full of those.

Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/70904572022-10-28T03:09:53-05:002022-10-30T07:30:18-05:00Carlene Carter sets return to Exit/In, site of her career start, possibly for the last time
Carlene Carter can trace the start of her professional career to a three-song audition at Nashville’s Exit/In while still a teenager. That audition for Hugh Bennet, who ran the club’s weekly writers night during the early days of the legendary venue, opened the door to her becoming a full-fledged professional musician. On Wednesday, November 16, Carlene – along with her band The Lucky Ones -- will again be playing the landmark club at least one more time.

The Exit/In has stood at 2208 Elliston Place since 1971, but will be closing at the end of November as developers and preservationists ponder its future or potential demise. That means it’s possible that Carlene’s November 16th show could very well be her farewell performance at the place where it all began for her. Over the course of its 51+ year history, the Exit/In has hosted such greats as Linda Ronstadt, R.E.M., the Allman Brothers, Leonard Cohen, Muddy Waters, Willie Nelson as well as June Carter and Johnny Cash, Carlene’s mother and stepfather, so there’s added meaning to this "Carter Girl" should it be shut forever.

On the heels of that fateful long-ago audition, Carlene, a third-generation member of the Carter Family, went on to pursue a career in music that took her to England to record with New Wave standard bearers The Rumour and to California. She went on to sign with a major label and scored a Grammy-nomination and several big hits including "I Fell In Love," "Come On Back," and "Every Little Thing," each of which went Top 3 on Billboard’s Country Chart.

She went on to be an accomplished songwriter for others and penned "Easy From Now On," an early hit for Emmylou Harris, the title track for the Doobie Brothers’ One Step Closer album, as well as tracks for various rock and country artists such as The Go-Go’s, Nick Lowe, Paul Carrack, Squeeze, Johnny Cash, Miranda Lambert and many others. Apart from duets with the likes of Dave Edmunds, John Mellencamp, Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, Vince Gill, Marty Stuart and Elizabeth Cook, she had returned to the Carter Family time and time again and in recent years has become the standard bearer of the legendary "first family of country music."

Her November 16 performance at the Exit/In will include some special guests including the legendary Tracy Nelson, who came to fame fronting seminal San Francisco band Mother Earth. "I saw Tracy at the Exit/In in the early '70s," Carlene recalls, adding, "that experience changed my life forever." Inspired by Nelson’s bravura performance, she decided to pursue music full-time melding country, blues and a commitment to "rock like hell" thereafter and that’s how it’s worked out ever since.

Her 1990 album and single I Fell In Love earned her even more fans and a Grammy nomination. Recent albums include Carter Girl (her acclaimed tribute to her family), Sad Clowns & Hillbillies with John Mellencamp, and The Carter Family Across Generations.

Yes it is my Birthday Month!

And I would imagine my 65th wouldn’t be happening without the care and support that MusiCares provided me with in my recovery!

At this point in time when so many of my peers and musicians are scratching to keep the lights on and survive this terrible pandemic we’ve gotta give a little and take care of each other.

These folks are good and know where and how to put donations to use!

So please y’all!

Share this post and if ya can send a little love towards the goal.

I love y’all and everybody stay safe.

Wear your masks.

Wash your hands.

Let’s take care of each other best we can.

We got music to make and lives worth living!

This is not an official installment of Music City Tales from the 1980s, though it’s strongly related. Let’s say that it’s a companion episode.

Carlene Carter is a legendary singer with a career that spans over four decades. She has released a dozen albums on her own, and she has recorded as a member of The Carter Family. Over the past few years she has collaborated extensively with John Mellencamp.

The event coincides with the release of The Gift, the YouTube documentary that chronicles and celebrates “The Journey of Johnny Cash.” The concert is being produced by Best Fest which, in the past, has presented Dylan Fest, Petty Fest, Neil Fest, Stones Fest and other tribute concert programs in New York, Los Angeles, Austin, San Francisco and Nashville. Among the other artists slated to perform at Cash Fest are Little Big Town, Dennis Quaid, Perry and Etty Farrell, Elle King, Todd Snider, Grace Potter as well as John Carter Cash and Ana Christina Cash.

Carlene is, of course, the daughter of June Carter who married Johnny Cash on March 1, 1968 when Carlene was still a pre-teen. She grew up in the home of her stepfather whom she always referred to as “Big John.” She toured and appeared on TV with Cash at an early age as part of the iteration of The Carter Family that included her grandmother, Mother Maybelle Carter, her mother as well as her aunts Helen and Anita. The legacy of the Carter Family looms large in country music history and was a focus of the celebrated Ken Burns’ Country Music series in which Carlene appears numerous times. More recently, Reviver Entertainment Group’s Legacy label released The Carter Family – Across Generations, produced by John Carter Cash, Johnny and June’s son and Carlene’s brother. The project juxtaposes five generations of the Carter Family on one album with Carlene playing a pivotal role; it serves as an audio thread to tell the story of country music’s undisputed first family and Johnny Cash is heard on three of the album’s tracks.

At Cash Fest, Carlene Carter with The Carter Family will include Dale Jett, Tiffany Anastasia Lowe, Lorrie Carter Bennett and John Carter Cash. Dale Jett is a grandson of A.P. and Sara Carter, Lorrie Carter Bennett is a granddaughter of Mother Maybelle Carter and daughter of Anita Carter, Tiffany Anastasia Lowe is Carlene’s daughter and great granddaughter of Mother Maybelle Carter. The event will mark the second public performance of Carlene Carter with The Carter Family, as they debut earlier in the week when they guest on The Grand Ole Opry on Tuesday, November 5th.

Carlene commented, “Big John respected, admired and lived the music of The Carter Family. In a sense, they became his own family even before he married momma. Grandma (Maybelle) loved him and provided him with a soft place to land in her home when he was struggling with addiction. I believe that Carter Family music took him back to his childhood in Dyess when he first heard them on the radio. He was drawn to The Carter Family by destiny because the way he felt when he sang with them was always meant to be.”

Now, from her new base in her hometown of Madison, TN, and in the wake of her pervasive presence on the Ken Burns Country Music series, this celebrated “Carter Girl” has put together two more evenings under that same banner. They’re set for two successive Wednesdays, October 30 and November 6. Rolling Stone declared the WWOWWW sessions “yet another reminder of the empowering role of women in country music” and “a musical homecoming shared with family and friends.” This month is doubly propitious for Carlene as it marks the release of The Carter Family - Across Generations from Reviver’s Legacy label. Produced by her brother, John Carter Cash, it is the first time that all five generations of the Carter Family are housed, so to speak, under one musical roof.

This year’s WWOWWW kicks off on October 30 with guests Terri Clark and Erin Enderlin. Terri Clark who hails from Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, made her way to Nashville in the late 80s and, from her first local performance at Tootsie’s Orchard Lounge, proceeded to become one of the top selling country artists, female or otherwise, of the era. To date she’s sold 5 million albums, has been inducted into the Canadian Country Music Hall of Fame and is currently the only Canadian woman on the Grand Ole Opry. Her top 10 hits include “Better Things To Do,” “If I Were You,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” “Emotional Girl,” “Now That I Found You,” “You’re Easy on the Eyes” and “I Just Wanna Be Mad.” She’s had a hand in writing many of her own hits and hosts an internationally syndicated “Country Gold” radio show heard on 165 stations through Westwood One.

A comparative newcomer to Nashville, Erin Enderlin began writing songs in her native Conway, Arkansas at the age of ten. She moved to Nashville to attend Middle Tennessee State University and by her senior year had co-written a Top 5 single (“Monday Morning Church“) for Alan Jackson. Other artists who have recorded her songs include Lee Ann Womack, Luke Bryant, Randy Travis, Reba McEntire, Bill Anderson and Jeannie Seely. No less a talent than fellow songwriter and “Wonderful World of Women...” participant Terri Clark recorded five Erin Enderlin songs on her recent Raising The Bar album.

The November 6th installment perhaps, mandates an asterisk in light of the fact that two of the performers are decidedly not female. Matraca Berg, of course, is and she’s making a return WWOWW appearance. This CMA Song of the Year Award winner and Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee has had her songs recorded by Ray Price, Tanya Tucker, Patty Loveless, Randy Travis, Deana Carter, Trisha Yearwood. Reba McEntire took Matraca’s The Last One To Know” to #1 on Billboard’s country Singles Chart.

Matraca’s husband is Jeff Hanna, who is a founding member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and will be joining the WWOWW session in support, both musical and elsewise. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, arranger, producer and songwriter of note. His music having been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Suzy Bogguss, Patty Loveless, Emmylou Harris, Johnny Cash, Carlene’s mother June Carter Cash, Steve Martin and, quite naturally Matraca Berg. He is co-writer of “Bless the Broken Road” which earned him a Grammy for Best Country Song as recorded by Rascal Flatts.

Lastly, John Oates, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and half of the legendary duo Hall and Oates that has been part of the American musical landscape since the early 1970s will be featured. Oates has pursued solo projects over the years and maintains a residence in Nashville. He bonded with Carlene at the recent introduction of the new Johnny Cash Martin Guitar and, of course, one thing led to another which landed him on the bill at WWOWWW. His recent Arkansas album release is focused on rural blues and roots country music so, irrespective of such rock classics as “Maneater,” “Rich Girl” and “I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)”, he promises to be a good fit with the WWOWWW’s nurturing acoustic ambiance.

Reservations will be available on a pre-paid basis for $25.00 one week ahead of each show date at www.bluebirdcafe.com

He was my first musical addiction apparently! When I was a baby Momma said Mystery Train was the only thing she could get me to stop crying for and while she danced around with me I would finally let go and fall asleep:-)!! Later he would push me around Central Park in my baby carriage while Mom was in NYC studying acting! Wish I could say I met him when I was old enough to remember. Still I think my body remembers the music as I can never stand still when I hear it:-)
Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/60808532019-05-16T19:00:00-05:002021-12-31T06:32:24-06:00Carlene and Daughter Tiffany with Nick Lowe!
Last night at The Franklin Theatre! "Tennessee was calling me," she relates.

The daughter of country music greats and Nashville legends June Carter and Carl Smith and the stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, Carlene aims to pick up where she left off and become a vital member of the Nashville creative community. That intent is underscored by a performance series at Nashville's legendary Bluebird Café that she's curating titled "Carlene Carter's Wonderful World of Women Who Write." As the title indicates, she'll be joined on three Tuesdays in October by kindred female songwriters of note.

The WWOWWW schedule is as follows:

Oct. 2 – with Lilly Hiatt and Elizabeth Cook

Oct. 16 – with Lauren Morrow and Pam Tillis

Oct. 30 – with Gretchen Peters and Matraca Berg

From her newly occupied residence in East Nashville, Carlene confides, "I was thinking about how we try to balance being women and all that entails as far as being partners in life and pursuing our creativity. It's a balancing act that only other women can fully appreciate." As far as the upcoming series at the Bluebird is concerned, she says, "I really wanted to say, 'Hey, I'm back home and ready to embrace the sisterhood of songwriting.' I had really missed the collaborative aspect that Nashville offers -- it's a secret sisterhood with us girls rooting for each other."

After she started unpacking boxes and getting settled, she conceptualized the series and reached out to fellow women songwriters. "Nobody said 'no' for any other reason than scheduling conflicts," she revealed. The final line-up is a mix of long-standing friends and newer emerging talents. "Pam and I came up together so we had that common bond of parents in the business and I've known Matraca for a long time, too. Elizabeth Cook and I became instant friends from the moment we met. I had known her music and her Welder album was the inspiration for me to recruit Don Was to produce my own Carter Girl album. Wouldn't you know it? She ended up singing on half of the album's tracks. I'm so thankful that Gretchen fitted in the date in the midst of her massive tour. She's so sweet."

Of her other "co-conspirators," she commented "I've known Lilly Hiatt's dad (John Hiatt) forever and I'd become aware of her for some time now. I really like what she's doing and we made an effort to include younger women in the series and she's certainly that. Lauren Morrow who has a new recording coming out right now told Pam and me that we were both influential so that's very flattering and she's terrific."

Carlene who grew up in Madison is delighted to be back home. "I run into people I know on the street and feel more engaged in life now that I'm back. I'm in my 60s and don't want to miss anything! I find living in the mecca of live music to be really inspirational." Another inducement for her return is the fact that 7 of her 8 grandchildren live in Nashville.

As far as the title for the series, apart from her admiration for the other artists who are joining her, she claims, "I'm a frickin' Wonder Woman because I'm still alive!" And she's loving life in Nashville.

Reservations will be available on a pre-paid basis for $25.00 one week ahead of each show date at www.bluebirdcafe.com

It was November in Nashville; the sky was grey the streets were wet, and I was in a hurry to get where I was going! And like always, I had the radio on, not quite at my usual blasting volume, but I could hear it in case something whispered... Turn me up!

Back in September I had turned 21, already with two husbands under my belt, two amazing kids to inspire the fire in me to get on with “it.” It was, that night, I was driving into “town” to “Writer’s Night” at the Exit In. All week I had prayed for a chance to play a new song I had written, so I was excited and running on the promise of that chance. As I pulled into the parking lot off Elliston Place, I heard a sound from my stereo that struck me like lightning! I knew I was running late, but I had a feeling I needed to listen on...

I have been so deeply sad for the passing of my friend Tom Petty.
There have been a lot of comments sent to me and I’ll get to them and will respond soon.
I am still reeling from the reality that I’ll never see him face to face on this earth again:-)
God bless his family and his brothers The Heartbreakers.
Everywhere I go people say, ”You knew Tom?”
I say that I was honored to have known him since we first met in 1978.
It was Denny Cordell who put us in a room with a couple of guitars and said, "You two kids behave yourselves and have fun!"
I just wish I could’ve spent time with him since Howie passed away, I had not seen or spoken to him... but I always loved him.
I saw this article and thought it a beautiful tribute to just one of his masterpieces:-)

From their bio:DWNTWN’s expansive artistic palette recalls the transcendently textured indie rock of Modest Mouse and Beach House, and the heartfelt sincerity of classic 1970s Laurel Canyon folk and early country, a la The Carter Family... Racing Time concludes with a stunning rendition of Anita Carter’s 1960s chestnut “As The Sparrow Goes,” featuring a guest appearance by Jamie’s stepmother, Carlene Carter. Here, Carlene’s richly expressive vocals beautifully complement Jamie’s dreamy singing. On the heels of the release of DWNTWN's masterful debut, Jamie is reflective. A moment that stands out to her in making the album is sharing her music with her stepmother. Jamie says: “It felt really good to reconnect. She told me: ‘I want you to know your dad would have been so proud of you.’”

Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/60808292017-02-17T18:00:00-06:002020-11-25T23:31:33-06:00Sad Clowns & Hillbillies Tour Announced!
Just announced this week is the John Mellencamp Sad Clowns & Hillbillies 2017 Summer Tour, with 22 U.S. dates in June and July, then 5 more Fair shows in August and September! This comes not long after the highly successful 2-year Plain Spoken tour with Carlene as Special Guest on all shows. The new tour will follow the April release of the new John Mellencamp CD featuring Carlene Carter (on Republic Records) which Katie Couric recently asked him about:

KATIE COURIC: "You just wrapped up a tour with Carlene Carter - cool - the daughter of June Carter and Carl Smith, stepdaughter of Johnny Cash. Now you have a new album that's coming out later this spring, called Sad Clowns and Hillbillies. You excited about that?"

JOHN MELLENCAMP: "Yeah, Carlene and I, we met, Stephen King and I were doing a musical (Ghost Brothers of Darkland County), and Carlene had a small part in it. It was traveling around the United States, and Carlene and I got to be friends, from me showing up periodically to watch the musical. Then I was doing something for Meg Ryan - she made a little movie (Ithaca) and she directed it, and I did the music for it, and I needed somebody to sing with kind of a twang ("Sugar Hill Mountain"). So I thought Carlene would be perfect for that. So I called Carlene and then Carlene started going on the road with me. Carlene and I became singing buddies, so we decided to make this record together. It’s crazy the way it started. It was going to be a religious record. It started out as like, ‘Look, let’s go back and do an old country religious record. We’ll try to write songs that sound like those songs, but they’ll be new.’ And then it just kept evolving and evolving and evolving. The songs she was bringing and the songs I was bringing, they weren’t so religious [laughs]. I write a lot of sad songs. So Sad Clowns and Hillbillies - that’s where it came from."

And from Carlene's interview with the Columbia Daily Tribune last fall: "He (John Mellencamp) is part of the soundtrack to my life, like he is to a lot of people," she said, sharing her memories of dancing to his hits and singing them loudly while driving in her convertible decades ago. The pair have traveled extensively together since. Carter opens the show for Mellencamp and, at some point in the set, they do a few songs together. They have become quite natural singing partners. "I don’t have a hard time figuring out where he’s going to go; it’s like I already know where he’s going," Carter said. Carter and Mellencamp have more in common than musical sensibility. Both have lived and made work with a similar sense of purpose and stubbornness. "We both have been uncompromised artists. I think we have that in common, almost like little rebels," she said.

Fans at the last leg of the Plain Spoken tour got to hear the duo sing two of their collaborations from the forthcoming album: the beautiful ballad "Indigo Sunset"; and the up-tempo gospel "My Soul’s Got Wings" with Mr. Mellencamp's music for lyrics by one of his heroes, Woody Guthrie. (In the unbroken musical circle, Mr. Guthrie adapted the melody to his most famous song, "This Land is Your Land," from a song recorded by The Carter Family.)

The Sad Clowns & Hillbillies tour starts June 5 in Colorado, and along with Mr. Mellencamp and Carlene will include Very Special Guest Emmylou Harris and Indianapolis folk-pop sister duo Lily & Madeleine. Emmylou of course is a long-time friend of Carlene, and was the first to record "Easy From Now On" which Carlene wrote with the late Susanna Clark back in 1977. Substituting for Emmylou at the 2 Oregon dates (June 10 and 11) will be singer-songwriter Jewel (who played Carlene's mother June Carter Cash in the 2013 Lifetime Television movie "Ring of Fire"). The 5 Fair dates in August and September will include just Mr. Mellencamp and Carlene. All of the info as always is on Carlene's Calendar.

Tickets for the tour will be available to the general public beginning Friday, February 24 at 10 am. Mellencamp.com and VIP pre-sale tickets will be available beginning Wednesday, February 22 at 10 am until Thursday, February 23 at 10 pm. Every online ticket comes with 1 physical CD of the Sad Clowns & Hillbillies album.

UK writer Terry Staunton posted on his Facebook page: "Had a lovely little chat with Dave Edmunds earlier today, for a piece I'm writing about country duets." Dave told him: "Singing with Carlene was the most fun I've had singing any song – ever! We would do Baby Ride Easy at any and every possible opportunity. We would have stopped people on the street to play it. I loved the way she would gaze up at me while I was singing my lines, I always got the feeling that every time we sang it we would fall in love with each other for three-and-a-half minutes. I haven't seen her for many years, but I know that if or when we meet up again, the first thing we'll do is sing this song."

Today we pay tribute to Carlene's great-uncle Alvin Pleasant (A.P.) Carter, born 125 years ago, on December 15, 1891 in Maces Springs, Virginia. With his wife Sara and her cousin Maybelle they formed The Carter Family, one of the first and most influential country music acts of all time. A.P. collected, adapted, and wrote original songs that became standards of American music like Wildwood Flower, Gold Watch and Chain, and Will The Circle Be Unbroken? He died on November 7, 1960 and in 1970 was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, and with The Carter Family in the Country Music Hall of Fame. In 1993 the trio was honored with their image on a U.S. postage stamp. Throughout her career, Carlene has recorded and performed many of the original Carter Family songs, most notably on her 2014 album Carter Girl. Today she wrote, "Where would music be without Uncle A.P.!!!"

This long-awaited and exciting Carter Girl Homecoming has been in the works for several months, but could only be officially announced today. Admission to the concert is $15 for adults, $5 for children 6 to 11, under age 6 free. Carlene’s concert will be solo with her playing guitar, autoharp, and piano. While her concert will not be a typical Carter Fold performance, it’s been far too long since she has performed at the Fold. During her extremely full and busy life, she has been unable to spend much time in Virginia at her mom’s birth place at the foot of Clinch Mountain. Carlene is the daughter of June Carter Cash and Carl Smith. Her stepfather, and the man she called Dad, was none other than Johnny Cash. Her grandmother was Maybelle Carter, and her great aunt and uncle were Sara and A.P. Carter. That’s an impressive musical pedigree by anyone’s standards.

Join us at the foot of Clinch Mountain at the Carter Family Fold for this long overdue concert – Carter Girl Homecoming. The Fold is so proud, thrilled and honored to welcome Carlene Carter home to the place that is responsible for such a big part of her musical heritage. Performing in the place so many of her family members performed on so many occasions over the last forty-two years, this promises to be one the most special and heart-warming concerts in our history. Carlene and her husband Joe live in California. She spends as much time as possible in Nashville near her children and her grandchildren, but she rarely makes it all the way to Virginia. Don’t miss this unique event as it may be a long time in coming around again.
Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/60808142016-04-14T19:00:00-05:002020-11-25T23:07:58-06:00Carlene Returns to UK / Ireland in June!
American country singer Carlene Carter makes her long-awaited return to the UK for a series of mid-June solo concert dates, with tickets going on sale Friday, April 15 for the following shows in England and Ireland:

June 10 - St Barnabas Church / Oxford, England

June 15 – Ballymaloe Grainstore / County Cork, Ireland

June 16 - Glor Theatre / County Clare, Ireland

June 23 - The Con Club / Lewes, England

Having started her career in the UK with her self-titled debut album (recorded with Graham Parker and the Rumour in 1978), Carter made London her home for several years during her marriage to Nick Lowe (who produced her third and fourth albums, Musical Shapes and Blue Nun), and spent a year on the West End stage in the musical Pump Boys and Dinettes.

Carter's strong connection with British fans was reestablished when her most recent release, Carter Girl, debuted at #3 on the UK Country Albums chart and was named Best Americana Album of the Year by Sylvie Simmons in MOJO magazine. Rolling Stone wrote: "to a certain generation, she was the cute and spry American babe who headed to the UK and struck up some relationships there, nearly all of them musical... this new album, produced by Don Was, is evocative, mature, and consistently impressive... A strong and very welcome showing for one of pop music’s long-missed characters, now back again."

As the special guest on the John Mellencamp tour, Carter has been performing her one-woman set in sold-out theaters across North America most of 2015 and April of this year. She told the Austin Chronicle: "I was pretty chuffed that I could open for a Rock & Roll Hall of Famer as an acoustic act by myself. Working with Mellencamp, I made new fans, people that may have never heard of me. They may have heard I was related to the Carter Family or Johnny Cash somehow, but what they got was pure Carlene. Very much in the spirit of the Carter Family, I’d just go out and do what makes people happy. I really enjoyed the process of playing by myself and I’m going to continue to do it for a while. It really does prove my theory that it’s all about the songs."

Carter says of the upcoming shows: "I'm so looking forward to the dates in England and Ireland, as I have deep roots there and it always feels like I'm coming home when I land at London Heathrow!" Her "special guest" on the tour will be her husband, actor and singer Joe Breen, whose own family is from County Clare, where his sister Christine Breen and her husband Niall Williams are well known writers living on the family homestead. Carter says: "I'm so excited to be bringing the music of the Carter Family via this 'Carter Girl' and share some songs, stories from my life, and have a lot of FUN at every show."
Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/60808132016-04-05T19:00:00-05:002016-04-06T08:28:14-05:00Merle Haggard (April 6, 1937 – April 6, 2016)

Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/60808112016-03-27T19:00:00-05:002020-01-17T23:28:56-06:00Carlene To Rejoin John Mellencamp On April 2016 Leg Of Plain Spoken Tour!
Next month Carlene Carter embarks on the 16-date 2016 Plain Spoken Tour with John Mellencamp. This is a continuation of their hugely successful trek across North America last year that encompassed 80 dates and won praise from critics and fans alike. Carter will perform solo, followed by Mellencamp, and then she will join him on stage for a handful of songs.

Carlene Carter has been releasing music for almost four decades. Daughter of June Carter and Carl Smith, and stepdaughter of Johnny Cash, her most recent album Carter Girl (Rounder Records), pays homage to her own musical lineage, consisting of songs culled from the Carter Family songbook as well as Carlene Carter originals. Carter Girl, produced by Don Was, features guest artists Willie Nelson, Vince Gill, Kris Kristofferson and Elizabeth Cook. The album’s repertoire serves as the cornerstone of her one-woman live set. After attending a 2015 Plain Spoken Tour performance, Jeffrey Lee Puckett of the Louisville Courier-Journal wrote, “The Carter Family was ground zero for country music as we know it, and Carter carried the weight of that immense legacy with an easy grace and rich humanity.”

“Opening act Carter delivered a captivating set that was full of storytelling and her rich, penetrating voice,” commented Randy Cordova of the Arizona Republic last year. “Though the mood of her songs was often darkly somber – ‘Lonesome Valley 2003’ is about the death of her mother, June Carter Cash – Carter’s sass and molasses-and-honey delivery is like the aural equivalent of a warm hug.”

Carter and Mellencamp have a rich history of working together. Carlene was involved in Ghost Brothers of Darkland County, a touring musical co-written by Stephen King and Mellencamp, and produced by T-Bone Burnett. Ghost Brothers tunes, including “Tear This Cabin Down” and “Away from This World,” have been performed as Carter/Mellencamp duets in past Plain Spoken Tour dates.

Kicking off on April 1 in Tulsa, OK at the Brady Theater and concluding on April 23 in Albany, NY, with over a dozen Midwest and east coast dates in between, the 2016 Plain Spoken Tour will give audiences the chance to see and hear Carlene Carter, whom the Portland Oregonian’s Jeff Baker describes best as “a spirited member of the First Family of American music who can fire up an older audience with nothing but talent, sassy stories, acoustic guitar and piano.”

Tickets for all Plain Spoken Tour dates are currently on sale.

This really is Carlene at the time I met her back in '77. She is still beautiful. Always will be to me." When Carlene saw the drawing, she wrote: "My dear friend Karen Brooks made this from memory of a 22 year old CC! She knows me well and is so talented in every way."

He was the father of Carlene's cousin Lorrie Davis Bennett, having been married to her mother Anita Carter. Hearing the news, Carlene wrote: "I'm tore up. I hate this has to happen. As we get older, the people we learned from and leaned upon leave us here. I know Aunt Nita, Momma and Helen will be so happy to be with him."

Starting when he was just a teen, Mr. Davis became one of the youngest and most in-demand musicians in the early days of the Grand Ole Opry, playing steel guitar both on stage and over 3,000 records with everyone from Minnie Pearl to Hank Williams, then as music producer for Johnny Cash, Waylon Jennings, and many others, plus arranger, publisher, and television host. In 1997 he was inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame, and released his memoir, Nashville Steeler: My Life in Country Music, in 2012.

Carlene wrote: "My Uncle Don Davis was the sweetest funniest man in the world. He always made us girls laugh and I loved every moment I spent with him. Incredibly talented musician and was successful in everything he put his hand to. An amazing father to Lorrie and Jay and to me he always had a smile and a loving hug no matter how old I was. I loved him dearly. He will be missed by us all who knew him. Even though death is a natural part of life it always hurts those left behind."

Hi! After the Ryman, out by the bus, in my jammies, ready to roll, and it was amazing, amazing to come back here and play two nights at the Ryman, with Mr. John Mellencamp, and to sing songs that I wrote about Momma, and sing Grandma's songs, and that's really being a Carter Girl. I got to be a Carter Girl, big time, the last two nights.

Just curious what people would pick for songs they'd like to hear at the shows this tour. If they had 8 songs, what would they pick? Could be fun and it might help me decide on my final set list. Get your tickets and come see this amazing show written by Stephen King and music composed by John Mellencamp. Set in Mississippi Delta it's a ghost story with infectious songs! Incredible cast!! I play Angie, a guardian angel of sorts and bartender of the Dreamland Café, a/k/a purgatory. My character’s job is to get Joe McCandless, played by the wonderful Billy Burke to "move on."

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County was written by author Stephen King, with music by John Mellencamp, and musical direction by T Bone Burnett. It stars actor/writer/producer Billy Burke (The Twilight Saga) and actress/writer/singer Gina Gershon (Killer Joe, House of Versace, Boeing, Boeing) playing the lead roles of Joe McCandless and Monique McCandless.

Carter, who has most recently been touring in support of her critically acclaimed Carter Girl album released by Rounder Records earlier this year, plays “Angie,” a character she describes as “a guardian angel of sorts and bartender of the Dreamland Café, a/k/a purgatory.” In a conversation from Orono, Maine where the production is currently in intensive rehearsals, she noted, “My character’s job is to get Joe McCandelss, played by the wonderful Billy Burke to ‘move on.’” She’ll also be lending vocal support to various cast members over the course of the Ghost Brothers performances that launch this weekend in Orono and go on to dates in Toronto, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco plus twelve other markets (see below).

Despite a blizzard that shut down electrical power in the cast’s hotel earlier this week (“seems like a good premise for a Stephen King story,” she quipped), Carlene is thoroughly enjoying her return to the theater, having worked earlier in her career in the London West End production of Pump Boys and Dinettes and in the Nashville-produced musical Wildwood Flowers in which she starred in the role of June Carter Cash, her own mother. “Gina and Billy are awesome and the whole cast is truly stellar as is director Susan Booth,” she commented. “I’m honored to be part of the whole Ghost Brothers experience and the passion that Stephen and John have brought to the piece is truly inspiring to me.” Carlene was recruited to join the Ghost Brothers touring company by Mellencamp on whose Plain Spoken North American tour she will be special guest over the course of 80 dates next January to August.

Ghost Brothers of Darkland County is a collaboration 16 years in the making, and blend of unique musical and staging styles. Throughout the production, the eerie blues ‘n’ roots music reveals the inner workings of the characters as opposed to just propelling the play’s narrative, with only a few songs directly advancing the plot. The haunting tale of fraternal love, lust, jealousy and revenge, begins with Joe McCandless reflecting on a past tragedy involving his two older brothers battling over a girl which ended in the unfortunate deaths of all three. Now with Joe as an adult and two boys of his own, he’s watching an all too familiar scenario play out before his eyes. With his sons at each other’s throats, Joe’s story will either save or destroy the McCandless family.

Thinking of my grandma today!!! It would have been her birthday and she would have been going to play Bingo with Peggy:-)! One of her many hobbies. On the list is bowling, fishing, card games, fussing at Grandpa and any kind of gambling! Number one though she loved to play music. She taught me all these valuable things to carry me through my life. I miss her every day since she has been gone from this Earth.

An honor and privilege to have known and worked with George Jones! Always made me smile:-)

Ohhhh so sad. He was called "little pal" by our family. Also a great friend of Daddy's. Last time I saw George and Nancy was at Cracker Barrel in Franklin, TN. He sat in a rocking chair and sang "don't need no rocking chair!" I'm checking on coming home for funeral stuff. I'm crying:-(!

That's Mike Pyle (left) and Paul Griffith (right). Great times back then with David Holt and Randy Leago. We had so much fun and played so many shows. Miss all those guys:-(!!

(What started as a seventh anniversary ski trip to Sun Valley, Idaho for Carlene and her husband Joe Breen turned into more when she was honored with a key to the city.) Got the key!!! Had a fun time, met the Mayor and got a letter from the Governor of Idaho. Met two authors and got their books signed, Charles Brandt and Leslie J. Little, great people. Mike Pool was there, he put it all together (he's my travel agent for years!) And of course Joe was with me. Here is a picture, and it's going to be broadcast on the CBS affiliate channel!! He plays banjo and writes songs with his partner Henry Warde. Oh by the way, he's wearing my Daddy Carl Smith's cowboy hat:)!! This boy is on fire for the bluegrass music and the traditional side of it. And he's not only related to us, he can pick that banjo like nobody's bizness! Please check out their website and Like them on Facebook!

Carlene has often named Lorrie Morgan as one of her favorite singers, and Lorrie has returned the compliment in a new interview with The Citizens Voice, Wilkes-Barre, PA:

Making your professional debut at age 13 with your country-famous father at your side, at the Grand Ole Opry nonetheless, one might feel a tad too frightened to stray, musically speaking. Morgan insists that although her father may have had an influence on her career choice, it was Carlene Carter (daughter of June Carter Cash's first marriage to Carl Smith) who inspired her. "I was, and still am, a huge, huge Carlene Carter fan. In fact, the first songs I sang at the Opry, with my dad of course, were Carlene Carter's versions of material. Other than her I'd have to say it was Diana Ross & The Supremes."

Carlene and Lorrie made country music history with Pam Tillis in 1996, with what Country Weekly called "The first-ever all-female country supertour." Visitation and funeral services were held on the following Monday and Tuesday, with many family members, friends, and fans attending to pay their respects. The service was officiated by Grand Ole Opry and WSM radio announcer Eddie Stubbs, who shared the podium with one of Mr. Smith's sons, followed by Kix Brooks (of Brooks & Dunn), who first asked Mr. Smith's long-time friend Little Jimmy Dickens to speak. All three told humorous and touching stories of the father and friend they knew and loved, with some of Mr. Smith's recordings played throughout, including a moving gospel number with The Carter Family.

Other stars at the visitation and funeral included Gail Davies and son Chris Scruggs, Ralph Emery, Vince Gill, Jan Howard, James Intveld, Jeannie Seely, Connie Smith and husband Marty Stuart; Carlene and many of her family including husband Joe Breen, children Tiffany and Jackson, sisters Lori Lynn Smith, Kathy and Cindy Cash, brothers Dean Smith, Carl Smith Jr., and John Carter Cash, cousin Lorrie Davis Bennett (daughter of Anita Carter), and many more.

The closed casket was surrounded by floral arrangements from family, friends, and fans including Jessi Colter and the family of Waylon Jennings, George Jones, C.C. Fan Club member Birgit Saehrendt in Germany, and the Franklin Police Department, SWAT, and K9 Units, with many of their officers present.

Also on display were photos of Mr. Smith's early career as a country singer, with wife Goldie Hill, and later images of the cowboy that he became when he retired from the music business to raise and show horses, all calling to mind something Mr. Smith was quoted as saying in 2003: "Call me lucky. Ever since I can remember I wanted to be a hillbilly singer and a cowboy. I was fortunate enough to do both of them."

As a "hillbilly singer," he placed 99 songs on Billboard magazine's country charts between 1951 and 1978 (with 30 in the top-ten, and five hitting #1), was a member of the Grand Ole Opry in the 1950s, starred on television and in films, earned a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and much more before retiring from show business in the late 1970s. Carl Smith was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2003, an honor many considered long overdue, though as Mr. Smith said at the time: "I appreciate it very much. I was afraid I was going to have to die before this happened."
Carlene Cartertag:carlenecarter.net,2005:Post/60807222008-12-09T18:00:00-06:002014-06-20T14:49:33-05:00Countdown With Keith Olbermann

Carlene Carter has never been much for politics, but apparently MSNBC's Keith Olbermann thinks one of her tunes sums up the dance between Congress and the auto executives. Here is a transcript from Wednesday night's show: OLBERMANN: "The last-minute push to punish the auto industry's unions and to give Republican senators something to bitch about, the bailout of Detroit or as Carlene Carter once sang, 'Never Together But Close Sometimes.'"

From NPR.org: Country singer and songwriter Carlene Carter is a third-generation member of country music's First Family. The Carters were extraordinarily prolific: Carlene's grandmother, "Mother" Maybelle Carter, along with A.P. and Sara Carter, cut some of the first commercially successful country music in the border town of Bristol, Tenn./Va., back in 1927. Those landmark sessions -- and Bristol's rich history -- are now preserved by the non-profit group The Birthplace of Country Music Alliance, which invited Mountain Stage to record in Bristol for a third consecutive year. The daughter of June Carter and her first husband, rockabilly singer Carl Smith, Carlene Carter is heard here in a special appearance in the historic border city, where she performs selections from her first new record in 12 years, Stronger.
It has just been announced that Carlene Carter, now one of the senior performing members of the first family of country music, will be opening for Elvis Costello at the Ryman (in Nashville, TN) on April 23. Carter's ties to Costello go back at least three decades, when her ex-husband Nick Lowe was producing Elvis' albums. Carter, meanwhile, is set to release her first album of new material in more than a decade on March 4. Titled Stronger and produced by longtime associate John McFee (of Doobie Brothers fame), the record reflects on the Job-like series of losses she endured in 2003, including the deaths of four of her closest loved ones during an eight-month span.
Nearly 30 years after her first album in June 1978, Carlene Carter is back with her new CD Stronger, which debuted at #69 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, her first appearance there since her last studio release, Little Acts Of Treason, peaked at #65 in 1995. Her highest-charting album was I Fell In Love, which made the Top 20 at #19 in 1990. CMT News reported the Billboard debut with: "making its bow is Carlene Carter's potent package, Stronger," and with Jo Dee Messina as the highest-charting new song, added: "It's good to see Jo Dee and Carlene back, isn't it? Those women can rock." The March 24 issue of Country Weekly reviewed Stronger with the latest Alan Jackson CD, giving both 3 1/2 stars and saying: "In country music, wandering spirits can always come home again."

The songs on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend reveal a blossoming songwriter whose gifts continue to expand, as well as a singer with impeccable taste in material. Lambert again wrote or co-wrote the bulk of the album's songs -- eight of the eleven tracks -- but she also interprets the work of some of the world's finest writers, including Gillian Welch, Patty Griffin, and Carlene Carter... As for the modern classic "Easy From Now On" (written by Carlene and Susanna Clark) which closes Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Lambert says: "That's a ridiculously great song. My favorite line is 'Don't worry about me/I got a wild card up my sleeve.' It's been recorded a few times before, but I don't think you can ever hear it enough." From Miranda Lambert Bio/Song Info.
